Have you received an invitation to a police interview, a summons or a judgment? Or are you the victim of a crime or an accident? In criminal proceedings a lot is at stake and deadlines are often short. A lawyer who assists you from the start makes the difference.
Devoldere Advocaten assists clients from Izegem and the surrounding area at every stage of criminal proceedings, both those who need a defence and those seeking compensation.
How can we help you?
- Defence of suspects and defendants: from the first police interview to the closing arguments in court and any appeal.
- Traffic law: traffic offences, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving bans and road accidents before the police court.
- Victims and civil party claims: we make sure your damage is recognised and compensated.
- Liability and assessment of damages: assessment of material, physical and non-material damage, also outside criminal proceedings.
Frequently asked questions
I have been invited to a police interview. What should I do?
You have the right to consult a lawyer confidentially before the interview and, in certain cases, to be assisted during the interview. Contact us before you make a statement. What you say in that first interview can weigh heavily later on.
I have received a summons. Do I need a lawyer?
It is not always compulsory, but it is strongly recommended. A lawyer reviews the criminal file, checks whether the procedure was followed correctly and builds your defence. Do not wait until just before the hearing: reviewing and preparing the file takes time.
I have to appear before the police court. What am I risking?
That depends on the offence: a fine, a driving ban, sometimes reinstatement exams. Good preparation can make a difference to the penalty and to the length of a driving ban. We will look at the options with you.
I am a victim. How do I get compensation for my damage?
You can join the criminal proceedings as a civil party. The judge then rules not only on the sentence but also on your compensation. We help you to assess and prove your damage correctly, from medical costs to non-material damage.
I disagree with the judgment. Can I still do something?
Often you can, by lodging an objection (opposition) or an appeal. The deadlines are short, so contact us as soon as possible after the judgment.
How much does a lawyer cost in a criminal case?
We make clear agreements about fees in advance. You may be entitled to a pro bono lawyer (pro deo), or your legal expenses insurance may cover the costs. We are happy to look into this with you. More information on our Fees page.
