A divorce, a death in the family, worries about the children: family matters affect you personally. Besides the legal questions, emotions and relationships play a major role. You need a lawyer who defends your interests while keeping a workable solution in sight.
Devoldere Advocaten guides clients from Izegem and the surrounding area in all family matters. Where possible, we seek an agreement with the other party, if necessary through mediation. Where needed, we represent you before the family court.
How can we help you?
- Divorce: divorce by mutual consent or on grounds of irretrievable breakdown, and the termination of legal cohabitation.
- Children: residence arrangements, child maintenance and parental authority.
- Inheritance law and estates: who inherits what, accepting or renouncing an inheritance, and disputes between heirs.
- Liquidation and division: dividing joint assets after a divorce, or dividing an estate.
- Youth law: assistance for minors and parents before the youth court.
Frequently asked questions
We want to divorce and agree on everything. Do we still need a lawyer?
In a divorce by mutual consent, you make agreements in advance about the children, the home, your assets and any maintenance. A lawyer makes sure these agreements are complete and legally sound, so they do not lead to new disputes later.
We cannot agree about the children. What now?
The family court can impose arrangements for the children’s residence and maintenance. The best interests of the child are paramount. We help you substantiate your position and, where possible, first try to reach an agreement.
A member of my family has died. Do I have to accept the inheritance?
No. You can also renounce an inheritance or accept it under the benefit of inventory, which protects you against the deceased’s debts. Get advice before you take any action, such as selling assets or closing accounts.
The division of an estate or of our assets after the divorce has stalled. What can I do?
If an amicable division fails, a court-ordered liquidation and division can be requested. A notary carries it out under the supervision of the court. We follow up the case and defend your interests at every step.
How much does a family lawyer cost?
We make clear agreements about fees in advance. You may be entitled to a pro bono lawyer (pro deo), or your legal expenses insurance may cover part of the costs. More information on our Fees page.
